Bead & Cowrie Studio
An adornment studio and material practice rooted in the relationship between body, object, lineage, and protection.

Bead & Cowrie

Making
Relationship
Material
Bead + Cowrie is an adornment studio and material practice rooted in the relationship between body, object, lineage, and protection.
What began with beads, cowries, and wearable objects continues to expand into a studio for studying what adornment can hold, communicate, protect, remember, and become.
Here, ancestral materials meet contemporary making. Beads, shells, metals, textiles, found objects, image, movement, and emerging materials become part of an ongoing practice of experimentation and relationship.
The studio does not approach adornment as decoration added to the body. Adornment is a material language: something made with the body, carried by the body, changed through wear, and capable of holding memory, identity, protection, pleasure, and possibility.
Bead + Cowrie is where those relationships are made material.

Cowrie shells carry deep ancestral memory across African and diasporic cultures—markers of protection, exchange, divination, road opening, creative fertilit, and spiritual continuity.
Beadwork carries lineage, prayer, and coded language through pattern, color, and placement.
Bead & Cowrie returns these materials to their original function:
to protect Black bodies, mark sovereignty, and anchor spirit in the body.
This work resists fast fashion and extractive aesthetics. Each piece is slow-made, intentional, and grounded in ancestral relationship rather than trend.

Bead & Cowrie
Decolonized Adornment for Black Embodiment
In a world that teaches Black bodies to be consumed, Bead & Cowrie is a practice of self-veneration.
Adornment becomes a way to reclaim the body from spectacle, fetish, and commodification—restoring jewelry as a technology of care. This is decolonized adornment: not for display, but for grounding, protection, and remembrance.
To wear Bead & Cowrie is to say:
My body is sacred.
My presence is intentional.
My adornment is prayer.
For non-Black bodies who wear this work: this adornment is an act of honor and responsibility. It asks you to restore intention and care to the Black bodies, cultures, and lineages you benefit from but are often taught not to recognize.
This is not cultural costume or aesthetic proximity—it is a practice of right relationship, accountability, and embodied care.
Adornment here is not neutral.
It carries lineage.
It carries memory.
It asks something of you.
This is your Wata(ring) W(hole).
And the practice continues beyond what is worn.
The same attention to lineage, material, body, relationship, protection, and responsibility moves through everything Bead + Cowrie makes. As the studio expands into new materials, objects, images, environments, and forms, the ethic remains: making is never separate from relationship.

Bead & Cowrie by Bespokecurry

Bead + Cowrie is an ancestral embodiment studio by Kiing Curry, an African artist, designer, and world-builder whose work centers Black liberation, ancestral memory, material relationship, and embodied sovereignty
.
Rooted in adornment and expanding across materials, objects, image, movement, ritual, and environment, the studio explores how making can become a pathway into relationship—with the body, with lineage, with material, and with the worlds we inhabit
.
Jewelry and adornment remain foundational to the practice, alongside Curry’s work with plant relationship, ritual, embodiment, and decolonized Afro hair care. Rather than separate disciplines, these practices move through a shared methodology: studying what materials carry, how bodies encounter them, and what becomes possible through sustained creative relationship.
