Open Post

Psychedelic collage of mushrooms with neon overlays, featuring a central cluster of fungi radiating purple lines, surrounded by colorful stylized mushrooms, abstract textures, and the text “Fungi Ting” and “African Pyramid”
fungi ting. not aesthetic. this is structure being revealed.

On Recreational Use — Fungi Tings Field Note

Claymation fungi character standing upright with a textured, hand-formed surface and grounded posture
 standing in it. fully formed.

there is a language that has been built around plant medicine that feels soft, expansive, and open.

but underneath that language is a pattern that is anything but.

recreation.

and not recreation in the sense of renewal or return.

recreation as escape.

recreation as temporary suspension.

recreation as indulgence that leaves the structure intact.

there is an absurdity in the way fungi is engaged right now.

Bright hot pink fungi form with smooth, sculpted surface and bold saturated color
loud on purpose. no soft entry.

social media has flattened it into:

  • a vibe

  • a personality

  • a moment

  • a soft aesthetic of “healing”

and in doing so, it has created a deep dishonesty.

because the relationship being presented is not a relationship at all.

it is consumption.

fungi is not something that you visit for a few hours

to feel something different and then return unchanged to the same conditions that are actively deteriorating your body.

that is not engagement.

that is interruption.

and interruption without integration becomes distortion.

the body does not forget.

you cannot open perception, soften boundaries, alter cognition,

Fungi character writing, overlaid with x-ray psychedelic effects in neon tones and layered visual distortion
writing from inside the body. you can see it now.

and then expect to close everything back down neatly without consequence.

this is where the dissonance lives.

people are asking fungi to expand them while remaining committed to the very systems that are collapsing them.

and so what is created is a loop:

  • expansion

  • contraction

  • confusion

  • repetition

over and over again.

what is being called “recreational use” is often just

a refusal to sit with the depth of what is being revealed.

Close-up of mycelium network with branching threads and clustered node points
everything connects. even what you tried to forget.
  • time

  • integration

  • behavioral shift

  • relationship to the body

and not everyone wants that.

not everyone has capacity for that.

and that must be named honestly.

there is also the influence of image.

Stacked fungi forms in green and neon tones with layered, glowing color variations
layered. growing anyway.

when you see someone who looks like you,

speaking confidently,

naming themselves as aligned or healed or aware,

it is easy to assume that their practice holds depth.

but similarity is not equivalence.

visibility is not knowledge.

fungi does not care about aesthetics.

it does not care about your feed.

Fine mycelium threads spreading in a web-like pattern across a dark surface
 the quiet work underneath.

it does not care about how you narrate the experience afterward.

it engages the body.

the nervous system.

the patterns you have been avoiding.

and if those patterns are not met,

then what is accessed becomes fragmented.

this is not a moral stance.

this is not about right or wrong use.

this is about clarity.

if you are engaging fungi recreationally,

then name it as that.

do not confuse it with healing.

do not confuse it with relationship.

do not confuse it with transformation.

because those require something else entirely.

Claymation fungi character holding and drinking tea, with a calm and grounded posture
 slow. listen while it speaks.

my relationship to fungi is not built on temporary relief.

it is built on sustained engagement with the body.

on disruption that is followed by change.

on allowing what is revealed to actually alter how I move.

that is where the work is.

and that is what is often missing.

fungi is not here to give you a break from your life.

it is here to show you the structure of it.

what you do with that is where everything begins.
