Bespokecurry / Independent Studio Practice

Bead + Cowrie began in March 2020 as a jewelry practice rooted in beads, cowrie shells, Black American childhood, diasporic memory, and adornment as ritual. What began with jewelry became the place where I learned more fully how I enter into creative relationship with material.

The studio has since expanded beyond wearable objects into a broader material practice encompassing jewelry, fiber, clay, assemblage, objects, props, installation, and experimental making. The medium changes; the underlying process does not. I encounter a material, study how it behaves, learn its constraints and possibilities, experiment, make connections, and develop those discoveries into form.

Bead + Cowrie Studio is now the material-making arm of the BespokeCurry Cosmos: the place where ideas developed through writing, research, memory, food, Black cultural practice, embodiment, and world-building become physical. It is both a working studio and a laboratory for translating concepts across scale—from something worn on the body to an object held in the hand to an environment built around it.

Jewelry remains foundational. The original Bead + Cowrie practice treated the body as sacred technology and adornment as a living archive of Black futurity, memory, protection, play, and pleasure. That language continues to move through everything the studio makes.
